Conceptions of astrology among Parisian scholars (1570-1680)

Jean Sanchez is a PhD candidate at the École Normale Supérieure of Paris in history and philosophy of sciences.  At the Linda Hall Library, he is working on his current project, “Conceptions of astrology among Parisian scholars (1570-1680)”, a history of the intellectual demarcation between science and superstition in the seventeenth century.

Jean’s first graduate degree was from the École Normale Supérieure of Cachan where he received his MA in Particle Physics from the University of Paris – Orsay in 2015. He worked in the ATLAS experiment, one of the main experiments of the Large Hadron Collider of the CERN in Geneva. In 2016, he received a second MA in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Paris – Diderot. His master’s dissertation dealt with the astronomical ephemerides produced by the Observatoire de Paris during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Since 2016, he has been focusing on the history of astrology, and especially how it intersects philosophical, political and religious frameworks in early modern period.
